NATIONAL FOUNDATION of HIGH SCHOOLS (NFHS)
RULES for High School Diving Competitions and 2009-10 NFHS RULE UPDATE Swimming & Diving
Note: No new significant rule changes in regards to Diving
Dive changes: No new dives were added to the DD list, however the adoption of FINA DD's by the NFHS in 2003 modifies the chart to restrict dives 5121, 5131 and 5421 to be done in D position only based on FINA Rules. NFHS, NCAA & USA DIVING All now follow the same DD chart, however NFHS has a restricted list of specific dives that may be performed.
At the 2007 CCC Championships and at the Section Finals we utilized a program called EZ Meet to help verify dive sheets and tabulate scores. Although a little time is needed to input the schools, divers, and dive sheets, it saved a great deal of time during the meet and at the end in posting results. Once the schools and divers are inputted they need not be added again and the diver's dive sheet can be imported from previous meets and dives changed as needed from meet to meet.
Some suggestions if you plan to utilize this program for your meets:
High School Diving Sheet Verifier: This link will download the verifier spreadsheet. You must have Microsoft Excel on your computer in order to open it. You must ENABLE the macros to allow the program to check the sheet for rules. If there is no option provided to ENABLE the Macros, check your Security setting within your EXCEL program. Go to Tools, Macros, to set to medium security. This will allow you to choose to ENABLE the MACROS required to run the program. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EXCEL, COPY THE PROGRAM ON TO A FLOPPY DISK and take to your school library for access. Your dive sheet can be saved on the program for your next meet.
Excel 5.0-DvfmHS Provides sheet checking for both 6 dive and 11 dive High School events with option for 1 meter or 3 meter list, includes DD charts and rules. This program will allow you to fill out and print a dive sheet to turn in that has already been checked for rules and high school degree of difficulty. Here is a BLANK Dive Sheet in PDF format for those who don't have access to Excel or who may need to make changes at the meet.
High School CIF DD chart (PDF Format) This chart has been adapted to include 3M diving based on the FINA Chart for use by Southern California (Southern Section CIF) High School Divers. NOTE: DD's for 1 Meter diving that do not currently agree with 1Meter FINA charts are highlighted in yellow for easy reference when filling out or checking dive sheets.
1 METER DIVING LISTS All 1 meter diving lists and DD (Degrees of Difficulty) must conform to the NFHS Charts published in the NFHS rule book. All divers competing nationally in ALL AMERICAN competition are required to compete 1 Meter lists only and meet the NISCA DD requirements.
DIVE EVENTS (6 DIVE) Dual meets
These events are usually held for Junior Varsity or as a Varsity Duel Meet. Divers who compete in a 6 dive event must follow the following criteria for the selected dives during the season.
NOTE: In other meets (6 dive events) the competition shall consist of 1 voluntary dive, which shall be done first. If the DD for the selected voluntary dive is less than 1.8 the true DD will be used. If the DD for the voluntary is over 1.8, the dive will receive the DD of 1.8. The voluntary dive will change with each week of competition in the season as follows:
TOP
2010 Diving Season
Mar. 1-5: Forward Dive group
Mar. 8-12: Back Dive group
Mar. 15-19: Inward Dive group
Mar. 22-26: Twisting Dive group
Mar 29- Apr. 2: Reverse Dive group
Apr. 1-9: SPRING BREAK
Apr. 12-16: Front Dive group
Apr. 19-23: Back Dive group
The voluntary dive will be followed by 5 optional dives with true DD, from at least 4 of the 5 groups and which may include any of the dives other than the voluntary dive. The voluntary dive must be selected from specific groups during the season at duel meets. (Not applicable at Invitational Meets)
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS and INVITATIONALS (11 dive)
In championship meets, the competition shall consist of five voluntary dives and six optional dives. The five voluntary dives shall come from each of the five groups, with their assigned (true) DD and have a sum total of 9.0 or less. The six optional dives shall include at least one chosen from each of the five groups. No more than one optional dive from the same group is permitted through semifinals.
07-08 NFHS Point of Emphasis:
1) Championship Meets. Championship meets are culminating meets which may include league championships, conference championships, district championships, regional championships, state championship series, etc. Invitational meets, and other multiple team meets, may use the championship meet format as determined by the state association or host meet management. Meet management of non-championship meets has the option of using dual confirmation, entry deadlines, etc. as stipulated in the meet contract or meet information. Meet format and other modifications should be stipulated in the meet contract or meet information.
ALL FIVE GROUPS MUST BE REPRESENTED IN THE FIRST EIGHT ROUNDS.
THE REPEATED OPTIONAL DIRECTION MUST BE IN THE LAST THREE DIVES.
Preliminaries: 2 voluntaries + 3 optionals
Semifinals: 2 voluntaries + 1 optional
Finals: 1 voluntary + 2 optionals
07-08 NFHS Point of Emphasis:
6) Divers Changing Dive Position to a Higher Degree of Difficulty Than Listed on the Score Sheet. Rule 9-3-6 allows divers to change the position of a voluntary dive if the listed position is protested to the diving referee before the dive is performed. This rule also states if the change in position results in a higher degree of difficulty than the dive originally listed on the diving score sheet the original DD will be used when scoring the dive. Rule 9-4-1a requires the total DD of the five voluntary dives to be a sum total of 9.0 or less. In championship meets, divers are not permitted to change the position of the dive if the listed degree of difficulty of the new position would make the true DD for the five voluntary dives greater than 9.0. It will be very important for the diving referee to communicate with the diving scorer to immediately recalculate the true degree of difficulty total any time a dive position is changed to one where the listed DD is higher than that originally listed on the diving score sheet. If it is not detected prior to the next dive(s) being performed that a change in dive position has caused the true DD to exceed 9.0, the voluntary dive causing the DD to exceed 9.0 will be failed. (See situation 9.4.1D for clarification.)
NOTE: To earn a letter some schools require that you qualify for CIF, check with your coach for the specific requirements for your school and points required to earn a letter however, you should discuss your own schools requirement for a letter directly with your coach as it may be based on reaching a set consideraton point level determined by your league or individual school.
In an effort to help HS Diving Judges standardize their scores, the NFHS has put together a presentation on some things to remember when judging a diving meet. I have also put together the following sheet that summarizes the rules from the 2007-08 Swimming & Diving Rules book. 2008-09 Judging Short form
To help parents and other spectators understand what is going on during a diving competition, I put together a Spectator's Guide to Diving for Diving teams to hand out at their competitions.
